Bra-Vo!

I shared a story in a previous blog about how I worked in an arts and crafts room for a summer day camp and how we reused pretty much everything we could for our beautiful craft projects and I remembered a cute story of one such a reusable item.  My assistant and I were going through everything that had been donated to the county program and came across these sealed bags with little white pieces of cloth that almost looked like hats that Gilligan would wear in the old TV show Gilligan’s Island.  “What are these?” I asked out loud and my assistant just shrugged.  “Well, we can make hats out of them for the younger kids!” to which she replied with a smile.  “That’s a good idea.”

Upon further investigation of the bags I noticed something that looked like a size.  An astronomically large size.  And then that they had been donated by the Women’s Center in the area.  “Oh my,” I started laughing.  “These are bra cups!”  My wide assistant grabbed the bag from me to see for herself.  “Oh….wow,” was all she could say but she burst out laughing.  “Well, they haven’t been used….” My mind was reeling.  What would people say?  And would it really matter?  “Why would someone donate these?”  My assistant asked.  I didn’t know but it didn’t seem to matter.  It’s not like they were used or anything.  I went ahead with my plan despite the rolling eyes my assistant and my supervisor gave me when I told them about it.

The next day the younger kids, aged 5-7, made cute little hats out of those bra cups and no one knew the difference until someone said something.  We decorated them with magic markers and glued little pictures cut out of magazines on them and the kids loved them and wore them proudly throughout the day.  I even wore mine just in case one of the younger assistants decided to make a smart comment to them.  My supervisor was laughing but also said, “Wow, you can reuse anything can’t you!?”  I nodded in agreement and put my bra cup hat on and went back to my arts and crafts room to find more things to reuse for crafts!  It just goes to show you that even the simplest and often times most ridiculous things can be used in some way, shape, or form for something!
