Green Living, Women's Eco-Impact

Dinner party. Renovation. Yoga. Celebrities. Clothes. Recipes. Daily Living Tips.

These are topics listed on Planet Green’s website. Regardless of how I feel about sex stereotypes, when I read the above items, I think “Woman.” I am sure most people do the same. And that is exactly the audience the new channel Planet Green targets.

Planet Green is the HGTV of sustainability, and there is a smart reason why creating an entire TV channel that attracts women is a brilliant solution to get momentum behind the ever-growing green movement.

Eight-five percent of consumer purchases are made by women, and that includes new homes, cars, electronics, healthcare, and vacations on top of clothing, food and daily do-dads. Women have historically been the purchasers of the household, so this is nothing new. What is new, and what really matters to the green movement, is that the numbers are being recognized and women’s dollars are gaining clout in the market place. Companies are recognizing just who exactly is doing the spending, and now women’s opinions are making a big difference.

Why does that matter to the green movement? Because women really like green products. Almost 50% of women say they want more green choices when they shop, and 37% will give more attention to brands that support environmental causes. A quarter of what women consume today is labeled as environmentally friendly.

An entire channel dedicated to green living is right up many a woman’s alley. By marketing the channel to women, Discovery will maximize their popularity, and more importantly, they’ll maximize income from all the advertisers scrambling to get on the green bandwagon and get the power purchasers shopping for their products. Having green education pumping through the TV is the perfect way to get the main buyers to do the green shopping that simultaneously drives our economy and cleans up our environment.

Below is a short interview talking about Planet Green just prior to its launch earlier this month.
