While watching the movie, “Who killed the electric car”, I was shocked to watch as the automobile industry finally did the right thing, for about a minute. They created a clean and cool electric emission free vehicle, only to recall it and destroy the rest of the fleet. To me, the key scene was in the middle of the movie, when an oil company was standing at a press conference, talking about how fuel cells were the future. Fuel Cells?! Who needs fuel cells when we have electric now, and have had it for over 100 years? I suppose it will come to no surprise to learn that the patent holder for one of the most promising car batteries is Chevron.
And that is usually the end of the story. Big fish eats little fish. But what has happened since then is a small number of Green businesses have appeared to not only meet the E.V. demand, several are recycling great old cars in the process. Some are creating their own E.V.’s from scratch, and many others are opening up small businesses that convert classic cars into electric vehicles. Just glance up at my new dream car above to get an idea.
What I love about this image is the sense of hope I receive from it. That our country doesn’t have to buy into everything big oil and auto says we should. That there are viable alternatives that are better and more beautiful. That the little guy is responding to the climate crisis AND creating jobs. That somewhere, far far away from Washington, the American spirit is still alive and well.
